Join the July 17th Book Study as we explore Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart”).
Join our book study on July 17, 2024, at 6 PM at the parsonage as we discuss Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart.” Told through the fictional experiences of Okonkwo, a wealthy and fearless Igbo warrior of Umuofia in the late 1800s, Things Fall Apart explores one man's futile resistance to the devaluing of his Igbo traditions by British political and religious forces and his despair as his community capitulates to the powerful new order. With over 20 million copies sold and translated into fifty-seven languages, Things Fall Apart provides one of the most illuminating and permanent monuments to the African experience with Christianity. Achebe does not only capture life in a pre-colonial African village, but he also conveys the tragedy of the loss of that world while broadening our understanding of our contemporary realities. Join us on July 17, 2024, @ 6 PM at the parsonage to explore this essential read. |
Journey to Thriving
Trinity UMC is thrilled to have received an invitation to join the first Journey to Thriving cohort that will participate in the Durham Pilgrimage of Pain and Hope, engage in a Learning Cohort, and develop a concrete Adaptive Plan. We are joined in this work with Epworth UMC and four black churches in Durham. This 4-year program is supported by a $32K grant by the Lily Endowment. You can read more about it here: https://durhamcares.org/journey-to-thriving/ Trinity UMC will select 2 people to lead the congregation. Those interested in this opportunity should display formal work in understanding systemic racism. If Caucasian, you need to have completed Phase 1 from Racial Equity Institute, which helps develop tools for organizers. (https://racialequityinstitute.org/) Contact Pastor Tobi for more information. Freedom School Dinner UPDATE!
Our work to serve and support the families and children from the Freedom School summer camp got off to a great start. This past Tuesday, June 25, 2024, we hosted our first dinner for the kids and families of Freedom School! Our volunteers were even better than the pizza and popsicles. Although volunteer slots for the next few weeks are covered, we still need just a few more volunteers for July 16th and our last dinner on July 23rd. Please take a minute to consider volunteering for one of the following dates: July 16: We still need a coordinator who will act as a point person and leader for the dinner (with support from Travis and the other volunteers). We also need three other non-coordinator volunteers. Click the link below to sign up to help. July 23: We need a coordinator and four additional volunteers to close our commitment to those kids and their families. Volunteers serve from 4:30 PM to 7 PM, beginning with preparing the food, serving the food, and cleaning up the serving area following dinner! Volunteers aren’t expected to plan or gather any items; we’ve covered that! We already have a meal plan and strategy, so committing to serving on any of these dates is easy! Click the link below and sign up now! For more information, please contact Travis (travis@trinitydurham.org or 706-351-9918) For more infomation visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0B4AAFAD22AAFEC07-49285002-freedom

BREAKING NEWS: C4C Expands its Partnership and Commitment to Serve the Kids and Families at Eastway Elementary!
C4C's commitment to the children and families of Eastway Elementary is expanding. While continuing their much-needed bookbag, school supply, and annual coat drives, C4C is adding new initiatives to help Eastway tackle a huge issue: student absenteeism. Unfortunately, many kindergarteners and first-graders miss as many as 40 days each school year. Attendance problems of this magnitude negatively affect the learning and serving environment. In response, our C4C team is collaborating with the administration at Eastway to shrink those numbers. Starting in July, when Eastway begins its new, year-round school schedule, C4C will help Eastway by creating opportunities for the most vulnerable kids by funding and facilitating opportunities for the students and their parents to learn about the importance of attendance and address some of the barriers and challenges that are disrupting the families’ ability to help their children flourish. We will start with lunch and snack programs to bring the children and their parents closer to a place where the school and the community can help! Stay tuned as we watch this wonderful ministry continue to grow. For more information or to figure out a way that you can get involved with helping Eastway Elementary, please contact Travis (travis@trinitydurham.org or 706-351-9918).
